The office of the State Treasurer has remained relatively unchanged since its creation in 1841, when the office of Eastern Shore Treasurer was abolished and the duties of the Eastern and Western Shore Treasurers were consolidated. Appointed by the legislature for a four-year term, the Treasurer receives and keeps all monies of the state and disburses them upon warrants drawn by the Comptroller.
